VP of Engineering

Talis has been retained to recruit a VP of Engineering for a privately held retailer.

Role:

Reporting to the President, the VP of Engineering will provide strategic and operational expertise to help scale the business and successfully execute company vision and priorities. The VP of Engineering will have a balanced understanding of business and technical objectives and hold strategic thinking and strong technical skills. This role will be well-versed in current technological trends and an excellent communicator. The VP of Engineering will bring operational leadership, technical expertise, and proven people development skills to take on strategic decisions about our technical ecosystem, department operations and engineering culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic insight, business case justifications and return on investment analysis for IT spending and initiatives.
  • In partnership with senior leadership, identify opportunities and risks for delivering products and services, including opportunities for innovation and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to business success.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technology standards, industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
  • Responsible for the overall technology security posture of the organization.
  • Partner with Product and Operations leaders to ensure that the architecture and technologies used are well-aligned with the needs of the customers as well as being efficiently maintainable, secure, and compliant.
  • Oversees the preparation and final approval of project plans.
  • Conducts or acquires cost analysis for development projects; prepares or delegates preparation of schedule of project completion dates.
  • Ensures that projects are completed within budget and in an economical manner.
  • Establishes and implements the strategic direction of the company’s engineering and development initiatives which include software, DevOps, Automation and processes.
  • Collaborates with the company’s executive leadership to develop and meet organizational goals while supplying expertise and guidance on projects, operations, and systems.
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements new technologies and systems to improve organizational processes and decision-making. Ensures that departmental decisions such as staffing, development, organization, hardware acquisitions, and facilities are in line with the organization’s business plan and vision.
  • Establishes, communicates, and implements engineering and development policies, practices, standards, and security measures to ensure effective and consistent operations.
  • Establishes and administers the department’s budget.
  • Maintains knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in engineering and development related to the organization’s industry.
  • Negotiates cost-effective contracts for the organization; coordinates and implements contractors’ work, and resolves any disputes over labor, scheduling, or payments.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent.
  • At least 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience, managing senior leaders in multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Passion for scaling an engineering organization and codebase.
  • Results driven; highly capable of executing in a fast-paced environment.
  • Establish, and measure, engineering KPIs and modern engineering practice
  • Experience building and managing highly complex systems, working with micro-services and/or distributed architecture
  • Experience with lean/agile modern development methodologies
  • Experience leading software engineering teams with a distinguished track record of delivering on technically demanding projects
